Dopo la mummificazione del corpo l’anima del defunto iniziava il cammino che l’avrebbe condotta davanti al Tribunale di Osiride

A partire dal Medio Regno nella tomba del defunto venivano collocate delle carte dell’”al di là” che indicavano il percorso da seguire, in modo che l’anima non corresse il rischio di perdersi in questi campi sconosciuti.

Il “Libro delle Due Vie” indicava i pericoli che l’anima incontrava nel suo viaggio, mentre il “Libro dei Morti” offriva formule e riti magici che associati agli incantesimi e agli amuleti le avrebbero permesso di vincere tutte le prove.

Dopo aver lasciato la tomba, l’anima iniziava il suo peregrinaggio nel deserto occidentale.

Quindi, giugendo ad un albero di sicomoro abitato da una divinità, solitamente Hathor, le venivano offerti cibo e acqua. Accettando questi doni l’anima dimostrava così il “non ritorno” cioè la volontà di proseguire il suo cammino.

Da quel momento iniziavano le prove sui cammini dell’Occidente.

Inizialmente l’anima incontrava dei demoni dalla testa di coccodrillo, dei serpenti, il dio Apophis e i demoni Am-au Hai e Hass, che cercavano di divorarla o di morderla.

Doveva poi attraversare ed abbeverarsi in un fiume dall’acqua ribollente, quindi giungeva nelle paludi dove delle scimmie, nel più assoluto silenzio, gettavano delle reti per catturare i demoni e le anime smarrite.

Come poteva l’anima superare indenne tutte queste prove e giungere al bordo del lago al di là del quale si trovavano le rive del regno di Osiride?

Soltanto proteggendosi con degli incantesimi e con la recitazione delle formule magiche del “Libro dei Morti” con le quali l’anima si dichiarava completamente identificata con le divinità.

Nel “Libro delle Due Vie” l’anima giunge al lago di Rosetau, custodito da un coccodrillo con la testa di ariete e armato di un coltello.

Nei Testi delle Piramidi ci sono due indicazioni per attraversare il lago che in questi testi viene chiamato Kha.

In una Thot , sotto forma di ibis, trasportava l’anima sulle sue ali. Nell’altra versione un genio traghettava il defunto che doveva subire dal barcaiolo un interrogatorio nel corso del quale era costretto a dire a ciascuno quale fosse il suo nome.

Superata anche questa prova, l’anima giungeva finalmente nel regno osiriano, dove veniva accolta dagli dei che assistevano Osiride e condotta davanti al tribunale per subire il giudizio.
