L’Uroboro è un simbolo molto antico, presente in molti popoli e in diverse epoche. Viene rappresentato da un serpente che morde ed inghiotte la propria coda.
Questa immagine molto diffusa rappresenta il cerchio nel suo personificare l’eterno ritorno e indica che ad ogni fine corrisponde un nuovo inizio, in una ripetizione costante.
Il ciclo dei tempi, fine del mondo e creazione, morte e rinascita e in senso derivato anche l’eternità come semplice cerchio.
La più antica rappresentazione di un uroboro si trova in un antico testo funerario egizio, chiamato The Enigmatic Book of the Netherworld, ritrovato nella tomba del Faraone Tutankhamon.
Nell’immagine, incisa all’interno del secondo scrigno, che conteneva il sarcofago del Faraone, sono rappresentati due serpenti che si mordono la coda e circondano la testa e i piedi di una figura divina mummiforme.
Nella simbologia alchemica l’uroboro, rappresenta un processo concluso che si svolge ripetutamente:
il riscaldamento, l’evaporazione, il raffreddamento e la condensazione di un liquido che servono alla raffinazione delle sostanze.
Il serpente a forma di cerchio, è spesso sostituito da due creature che collegano la bocca alla coda. La creatura superiore, segno della volatilità, è rappresenta da un drago.
