L’autore del libro “Cuore, abitò in piazza Statuto all’angolo con corso Beccaria e fu qui che scrisse uno dei più bei libri che siano stati dedicati a Torino: “La carrozza di tutti” (1899).

Così descrisse un notturno d’estate torinese:

”… sotto le lunghe ghirlande di lampade voltaiche sospese in alto sul mezzo delle strade corrono i fanali delle carrozze. Quella moltitudine di gente che si vede di sfuggita affollata davanti ai caffè, a crocchi sugli usci, a gruppi sui terrazzi, a processioni sui marciapiedi e a fuggire così fra quei mille giochi di luce, in mezzo a quel brulichio di gente riposata e svagata.

In quell’area profumata dall’erbe e dai fiori dei giardini, nella quale si succedono e si confondono note di cantanti di caffè, suoni d’orchestre di birrerie, ritornelli di canzoni popolari e musiche erranti di mandolini e di fisarmoniche, sembra di attraversare una città meravigliosa, dove rida una festa perpetua e siano sconosciuti gli affanni, le fatiche la miseria”:

Nel volume “Torino 1880”, descrisse il miscuglio di classi dell’attuale Porta Palazzo:
”Ma per vederla in tutta la sua bellezza bisogna capitarvi una mattina di sabato d’inverno in pieno mercato.

Uno Zola torinese potrebbe mettere lì la scena di un romanzo intitolato “Il ventre di Torino”.

Sotto le vaste tettoie, fra lunghe file di baracche di mercanti di stoffe, di botteghini di chincaglierie e d’esposizioni di terraglie all’aria aperta. In mezzo a monti di frutta, legumi e di pollame, a mucchi di ceste e di sacchi. Tra il va e vieni delle carrette che portano via la neve, tra il fumo delle castagne arrosto e delle pere cotte, gira e s’agita confusamente una folla fitta di contadini, di servitori, di sguatteri, di serve imbacuccate negli scialli, di signore massaie, di ordinanze colla cesta al braccio, di facchini carichi, di donne del popolo e di monelli intirizziti, che fanno nera la piazza.
