VI RACCONTO TORINO
Poche città, nel bene e nel male, possono vantare i primati di Torino. Prima capitale d’Italia, città esoterica per eccellenza dalle cento e più chiese, ma anche una delle città più ricche di carceri.
Prigioni per i detenuti normali, per i politici e per le donne e come se non bastasse a Torino hanno fatto “bella mostra”: la forca, la ghigliottina, la tortura e la gogna per i debitori e i banchieri.
All’angolo tra l’attuale via Milano e via Corte d’Appello c’era una pietra lucida, levigata dall’uso, era il “masso dei falliti”.
I debitori insolventi erano fatti sedere là tra il pubblico ludibrio. Dopo la lettura della sentenza e della condanna il debitore veniva fatto sbattere con il sedere sulla pietra.
Al posto della pietra, a volte, c’era una sorta di panca di legno che a colpi di sedere il fallito doveva rompere per ripetere simbolicamente il suo reato di bancarotta.
Dei vari boia, tra realtà e fantasia, si è detto molto. L’ultimo un certo Pietro Pantoni abitava in via Monelli 2, edificio ancor oggi indicato come la “Casa del Boia”.
Quando la ghigliottina smise di fare il suo lavoro, fu smontata e collocata per molto tempo nel chiostro della chiesa del Carmine. Vi sono stati clamorosi casi di impiccati che, liberati dal cappio respiravano ancora. La storia ci ricorda anche di una grazia giunta pochi minuti prima che la testa di Bernard de Corbilly fosse recisa di netto.
Era il primo settembre 1704, quando una lunga processione uscì dal maschio della Cittadella, preceduta da uno stendardo con dipinto uno scheletro con il motto “Manus Domini tetigit me”.
I confratelli della Misericordia, avvolti dentro il loro sacco nero con il volto coperto dal cappuccio dello stesso colore intonavano con voce cupa le preci degli agonizzanti. Li seguiva Bernard de Corbilly sostenuto da alcuni religiosi, tra due file di guardie.
Corbilly, comandante del forte di Santa Maria di Susa, era colpevole di aver ceduto la piazza ai francesi, appena la breccia fu aperta, senza aspettare l’assalto.
La processione terminò intorno al palco eretto poco lontano dalla Cittadella dove incombeva la ghigliottina.
Bernard appoggiandosi ai religiosi, salì i gradini mentre il boia gli si faceva incontro.
La folla, come ipnotizzata, era lì a guardare, tuttavia sentendo un forte rumore di zoccoli, si voltò in direzione della strada che oggi è dedicata a Santa Teresa.
Un ufficiale che agitava un fazzoletto stava giungendo al galoppo. Era il maggiore Foschieri giunto in tempo per portare la grazia al condannato.
La folla continuò per parecchi minuti ad applaudire Bernard de Corbilly, il quale venne riaccompagnato nella Cittadella dallo stesso corteo di prima … questa volta i confratelli della Misericordia cantavano il “ Te Deum”.
