Poche sono le informazioni sull’Antica Tebe. Probabilmente all’inizio era un piccolo borgo che nel tempo divenne il nucleo da cui sorse la grande città frutto dell’unione di più villaggi: Opet – Suet (Karnak), Opet Sud (Luxor) e Waset.

Deir el Bahri, Deir el Medina, Medinet Habu, Memnome, il Ramesseum, la Valle dei Re, costituiscono la necropoli tebana sulla riva occidentale del Nilo, ed era chiamata Waset occidentale.

Qui si possono trovare le più antiche testimonianze di Tebe capoluogo di nomos.

Nella necropoli di Dira Abu’n Naga, infatti, si trovano alcune tombe dei faraoni Antef, vissuti proprio nel periodo in cui Tebe iniziò a diventare la grande città conosciuta in tutto il mondo antico. Quando nel Medio Regno, l’Egitto fu riunificato, Tebe ne diventò la capitale, mentre nel periodo della dominazione degli Hyksos tornò a essere capitale di nomos. Gli Ahmes, artefici della nuova riunificazione, accrebbero il prestigio della città per tutta la XVIII dinastia.

Fu per ragioni strategiche che i Ramessidi si stabilirono nel Delta, tuttavia Tebe rimase la capitale dell’Impero.

Il suo declino iniziò nel periodo in cui i sovrani libici succedettero ai re taniti. La città conservò tutto il suo prestigio fino a quando nel VII secolo a.C., subì due saccheggi da parte degli Assiri, nonostante questo riuscì a risollevarsi, ma solo per un breve periodo, per poi finire in un’inesorabile decadenza.

I monumenti rimasti testimoniano lo splendore di Tebe la “Città di Ammone”.

La celebre capitale dei faraoni del Medio e del Nuovo Regno, nota in tutto il mondo con il nome greco “Tebe”, era una vera e propria metropoli, fervente di vita e attività.
