Considerando che il popolo egizio apparteneva al faraone era a lui che i suoi sudditi dovevano, in cambio del cibo, prestazione lavorativa gratuita.

Solo gli artigiani e i contadini, la parte produttiva era soggetta al pagamento delle tasse.

Durante l’epoca tinita furono fatti vari censimenti che permettevano di conoscere le future entrate con ampio anticipo.

Come avveniva?

Si valutava il presunto rendimento dei campi al momento della mietitura, calcolo fatto osservando l’altezza raggiunta dalle piene del Nilo.

L’ammontare dell’imposta era poi conteggiato dagli scribi.

L’importo delle tasse non era lasciato al potere decisionale degli scribi, ma il tutto era seguito da funzionari che dovevano osservare una prassi determinata.

Erano rari i casi in cui un contadino doveva versare un tributo che non era in grado di pagare.

Anche i templi erano soggetti al pagamento delle imposte, salvo che non fossero in possesso di una carta d’immunità (ar), depositata negli archivi reali, dove erano elencati diritti e doveri.

Frequenti sono le raffigurazioni, tra le pitture tombali, di scene di prelievo delle imposte nei campi e delle bastonature inflitte ai recalcitranti contadini.
