Odino, la fronte corrucciata, osservava Yggdrasil, l’albero della vita: le sue foglie sempreverdi cominciavano a seccarsi. Il padre degli uomini e degli dei sapeva che lo scontro finale era vicino, e questo perché non aveva mantenuto la parola.

Ragnarok

Aveva permesso che gli Asi facessero del male a Loki e seppur Loki era malvagio, era pur sempre fratello di sangue di Odino. Il mondo degli Asi era costruito sull’onore e svanito quello gli Asi cessarono di essere nobili e sacri.

Il mondo stava andando in pezzi.

Odino si recò quindi alla tomba della donna saggia e dalla testa di Mimir per chiedere consiglio. Tutto ciò che gli riuscì di sapere fu:


“Tempo di asce, tempo di spade, qui cade il mondo, tempo di venti, tempo di lupi!  Ne sai di più adesso o no?”

Odino capì che Ragnarok, il giorno in cui sarebbe stato deciso il destino degli dei, era molto vicino. Presto gli Asi avrebbero dovuto affrontare le forze della distruzione e vincerle, altrimenti ne sarebbero stati annientati. Da quando Balder era trapassato nel regno di Hel non c’era più gentilezza tra gli dei e tra gli uomini.

Gli uomini, bramosi d’oro, si derubavano tra loro e si uccidevano l’un l’altro. Guerre sanguinose infuriavano su tutta la terra.

Odino e le Valchirie correvano su ogni campo per raccogliere il maggior numero di eroi per combattere la battaglia finale.

Thor combatteva contro jotun e troll che, diventati più spavaldi, erano sempre più vicini alla terra che bersagliavano con neve e ghiaccio. Il loro alito gelato spandeva una nebbia ghiacciata sulla terra che impediva ai raggi del sole di filtrare.

Fu così che l’inverno durò per tre lunghi anni. La neve copriva la terra, nulla germogliava, nulla cresceva. Gli uomini non combattevano più per l’oro, ma per il cibo.

Una mattina, prima del sorgere dell’alba, il gallo d’oro di Asgard cantò a squarciagola, gli fece eco dal sottosuolo il gallo nero che viveva sul tetto della dimora di Hel.

Il giorno di Ragnarok era arrivato.

La terra si aprì in due sino al regno dei morti, Garm, il cane da guardia di Hel, balzò via libero dal guinzaglio. Il lupo Fenrir si liberò dalla catena magica e Loki balzò fuori dal suo letto. Nel profondo Nifheim il drago Nidhogg morse le radici di Yggdrasil che vacillò perdendo tutte le foglie.

 “Sventura” gridarono le Norne ai piedi dell’albero. Si coprirono il volto smettendo di tessere i fili della vita. Heimdall, dal suo posto di guardia, vide i nemici avanzare. Sollevò il corno e vi soffiò dentro con tutto il fiato che aveva in gola. Gli squilli risuonarono attraverso tutti i mondi. Gli Asi balzarono in piedi, le innumerevoli porte del Valhalla si aprirono e l’esercito degli eroi si precipitò fuori. La gigantesca armata iniziò la marcia allineandosi dietro Odino che cavalcava il suo destriero a otto zampe. Al suo fianco Thor che osservava la moltitudine di Jotun e troll che avanzavano da oriente.


Il serpente di Midgard si incontrò con il lupo Fenrir, suo fratello. Uno accanto all’altro i due terribili mostri si fecero avanti, mentre da nord arrivava il vascello Nagelfar. Al timone a indirizzare le vele attraverso il mare in tempesta c’era Loki tornato per vendicarsi.

Attraverso una fenditura penetrò Surt, il signore di Muspelheim, il mondo del fuoco. Roteando la spada fiammeggiante si lanciò di corsa su per il ponte di arcobaleno, dietro di lui orde di demoni, tutti con un solo pensiero: conquistare Asgard. Ma quando salirono sul ponte questo si ruppe e crollò. Surt e i suoi guerrieri puntarono allora verso il campo Vigrid, il campo più grande di tutto il mondo. Lì i demoni del fuoco furono raggiunti da troll, jotun, fantasmi e mostri e rimasero in attesa che gli Asi si presentassero a combattere.

Odino puntò subito dritto contro le mascelle spalancate di Fenrir, ma prima di potere scagliare la lancia giù per la gola del lupo, quest’ultimo si mosse in avanti e l’ingoiò.

Impegnato a lottare contro il serpente di Midgard Thor non poté correre in aiuto del fratello. Più e più volte dovette tirare il martello sulla testa del serpente prima che morisse. Thor sopravvisse per pochi secondi, poi cadde a terra ucciso dall’alito velenoso del serpente. Odino fu vendicato dal figlio Vidar che possedeva un enorme stivale che spinse dentro le fauci del lupo divaricando a tal punto le mascelle che la testa si spaccò in due. Loki e Heimdall caddero trafitti l’uno dalle armi dell’altro. Anche Tyr e Garm si uccisero a vicenda.

La battaglia terminò, la maggior parte degli Asi e tutti i guerrieri di Odino giacevano a terra.

Poi i due jotun vestiti da lupi presero il sole e la luna e li ingoiarono. Il mondo degli Asi cadde nell’oscurità e Yggdrasil, l’albero del mondo, si spezzò e cadde. Surt alzò la spada fiammeggiante e diede fuoco a ogni cosa. Il mare si sollevò sopra le montagne e cadde con uno schianto su tutte le terre. L’aria tremò, le stelle furono strappate dal cielo, mentre la terra in fiamme scompariva sotto le onde. Anche le sacre dimore degli Asi vacillarono e poi crollarono. Dalla profondità emerse Nidhogg, il drago della distruzione, volteggiò sopra il mondo caduto poi affondò nuovamente nel vuoto.

Tutto ciò che rimase del mondo degli Asi era il campo di Ida dove un tempo sorgevano dimore d’oro.

Fu lì che gli Asi sopravvissuti si ritrovarono. Quando la terra si era aperta in due, Balder, il mite, era salito da Hel portando con sé il fratello Hod. A loro si unirono Magni e Modi, i figli minori di Thor, oltre a Vidar e Vali, i più giovani tra gli Asi. Hoenir, il fratello di Odino, tornò dal lontano mondo dei Vani. Silenziosamente gli ultimi Asi percorsero a piedi il campo di Ida guardando le rovine di quelle che un tempo erano state le loro dimore. Ritrovarono gli scacchi d’oro con cui avevano giocato nei giorni lieti.

Non c’era più nessuno da guidare.
Non c’era più nessuno di cui prendersi cura.
Non c’era più niente da fare, se non giocare a scacchi ripensando a ciò che era stato.
