A lui si deve la fondazione del noto riconoscimento che ogni anno viene assegnato dalla “Columbia University” di New York a giornalisti e scrittori americani.
Joseph Pulitzer nasce in Ungheria il 10 aprile 1847, il padre è un ricco mercante ebreo, mentre la madre, di origine tedesca, è di religione cattolica.
Dopo aver ricevuto un’ottima educazione, nel 1864 emigra negli Stati Uniti arruolandosi nell’esercito federale.
La sua carriera inizia nel 1868 a Saint Louis dove lavora come reporter per il “Westliche Post”, giornale in lingua tedesca, di cui acquisterà parte della proprietà nel 1871.
Allaccia inoltre i primi contatti con la politica, che sarà il suo principale campo di interesse per il resto della vita. Nel 1869 si candida alla legislatura di stato: è vincitore al fianco del Partito Repubblicano. Inizia così sua lotta alla corruzione pubblica e privata, nel perseguimento della quale molti gli accreditano mezzi poco ortodossi come le minacce armate.
Pulitzer è il portavoce dei cittadini e della democrazia. Ssvela la fitta trama di corruzione politica del governo, sostiene i lavoratori e combatte il monopolio e i consorzi, battendosi per rendere la professione del giornalista “un modo onesto per guadagnarsi da vivere”.
Dopo aver conseguito la laurea in legge, nel 1878 fonde i quotidiani “Evening Post” e “St. Louis Evening Dispatch”, nasce così il “St. Louis Post-Dispatch”. E’ un successo, ma Pulitzer aspira ad un pubblico ancora più vasto.
Cinque anni più tardi, nel 1883, si trasferisce a New York e rileva il “New York World”, portandolo ad alti livelli di popolarità e diffusione. In poco tempo diventerà una delle più grandi e influenti testate del suo tempo.Nel 1903 dona alla Columbia University un milione di dollari per la costituzione di una scuola di giornalismo.
Joseph Pulitzer muore a Charleston (Carolina del Sud) il 29 ottobre 1911. Dopo la sua morte, grazie alle sue ultime volontà, viene fondata la “Columbia University School of Journalism” e costituito il celebre premio a lui intitolato.
Oggi il comitato è noto come “Pulitzer Prize Board”, ed è composto da editori, giornalisti, professionisti di altri ambiti e dalle cariche più alte della Columbia University.

greifen diese Tools eigentlich zurück? Liefern die brauchbare Ergebnisse
und, ja, können wir da systematisch Keywords für recherchieren und aufarbeiten? Ist sehr wichtig bei der
Tool-Auswahl, weil die Tools eine unterschiedliche Datenbasis haben, mal, in welchen Ländern man ist, ne.
