Josè de Sucre, uno dei migliori generali di Bolivar in pochi giorni è sulle pendici del Vulcano Cotopaxi, molto vicino a Quito, dove si trova il generale Melchor Aymerich.
I realisti evitano lo scontro, il generale si mette in marcia lungo le pendici del vulcano Pichincha. Vuole occupare le vie a Nord di Quinto per isolare la città.
Il piano viene portato a compimento da alcune unità di Cavalleria, mentre il resto delle truppe combatte con i realisti.
Il 24 maggio i realisti vedono le truppe di Sucre in movimento nella zona del monte Panecillo e decidono di attaccarle. I primi scontri avvengono con gli Argentini del Battaglione Yaguachi. Anche le forze colombiane agli ordini del generale Josè Mires entrano in combattimento.
Due battaglioni agli ordini del colonnello Cordova cercano di aggirare i madrileni, mentre i battaglioni Trujillo e Yaguachi, rimasti ormai senza munizioni si ritirano.
Attacco molto duro per i realisti che devono subire l’offensiva dai britannici del Battaglione Albione, che scortava la carovana di munizioni nella retroguardia indipendentista.
Alle 12.00 il battaglione Alto Magdalena attacca i realisti.
Le cavallerie non intervengono a causa delle asperità del terreno, quando gli indipendentisti entrano a Quito, la cavalleria realista è in fuga. Il 25 maggio Aymerich si arrende.
Le sue truppe conquistarono anche le bandiere nemiche. L’Ecuador finalmente può unirsi alle altre colonie liberate.
