Nel Medioevo la malattia era considerata una condizione naturale dell’uomo.
Il primo perché l’uomo discendendo dal peccatore Adamo, aveva perso la somiglianza con Dio, quindi era diventato debole e malato; secondo perché la malattia era ritenuta uno strumento di Dio.
Sopportando con rassegnazione le sofferenze, l’uomo otteneva così la salute dell’anima, perciò se la malattia veniva da Dio, anche la guarigione doveva venire da Dio
In origine l’ospedale era retto dalla carità dei religiosi e vi trovavano accoglienza, oltre ai malati vagabondi, orfani, vecchi e donne sole.
I primi ospedali erano edifici costruiti al centro del villaggio per i poveri e i malati, mentre all’esterno delle mura sorgevano gli “Hospitale” per i viaggiatori e i pellegrini.
Per un malato “povero”, la terapia consisteva in preghiera, pellegrinaggi e processioni e l’unica assistenza che aveva era quella data dai religiosi.
Levatrici, anziane del villaggio, esperte di erbe, questo fino a che non vennero considerate streghe dalle autorità ecclesiastiche.
Le guerre della fine del Medioevo e la peste ridurranno il vecchio sistema ospedaliero alla crisi totale. Toccherà alle autorità comunali il compito di gestire e costruire gli ospedali.
