Nella mitologia greca Nemesi (collera) è rappresentata con un metro, una bilancia e una spada.
Allo stesso tempo l’implacabile vendetta che punisce chi si macchiato di un delitto contro la comunità.
E’ la potenza che abbatte l’eccesso di felicità in un mortale o l’orgoglio di un re. Suo compito è quello di riequilibrare il destino di coloro che hanno subito una sorte non meritata.
In una Nemesi è la figlia della notte, (Nyx) che riuscì a sottrarsi all’amore di Zeus compiendo varie metamorfosi finché, tramutatasi in oca, non fu posseduta dal dio trasformatosi in cigno.
Secondo un’altra versione Zeus, sempre con le sembianze di un cigno, riuscì a sfuggire ad un’aquila trovando protezione nel grembo della dea. Da ciò ebbe come conseguenza la nascita di uovo covato da Leda, regina di Sparta, dal quale nacque poi il Elena, il cui ratto causò la guerra di Troia.
Piccoli altari dedicati al culto di Nemesi erano spesso collocati nelle vicinanze delle entrate alle arene romane dove i gladiatori offrivano sacrifici.
