I Chumash, una tribù di nativi americani stanziati nelle zone costiere della California centrale, erano cacciatori e agricoltori, ma erano abili anche nella pesca.
Questa tribù è una delle poche che navigarono nell’oceano Pacifico, le loro imbarcazioni erano dette “Tomols” ed erano piccole e strette.
Secondo un mito dei Chumash, i primi membri della tribù vivevano sull’isola di Limuw (Santa Cruz).
Il rumore di così tanta gente iniziò a irritare Hutash, la Terra Madre, che non riusciva a riposare. Un giorno Hutash decise che alcuni Chumash dovessero emigrare dall’isola per raggiungere il continente, in quel tempo non ancora popolato.
Come potevano i Chumash superare il mare che divide l’isola di Limuw dal continente?
Hutash costruì un lunghissimo e altissimo ponte-arcobaleno che univa le due terre, e ordinò ai Chumash di attraversare l’arcobaleno e di popolare i territori del continente.
Durante l’attraversamento, però, alcuni Chumash guardando giù, furono sopraffatti dalle vertigini e caddero nel mare.
