Della musica nell’antico Egitto sappiamo poco dato che la scrittura musicale sarà inventata dai greci.
Fortunatamente ci aiutano documenti di altro genere: raffigurazioni di musici e strumenti musicali.

Era costituito da una lamina curvata a U fissata ad un manico, con larghi fori dentro cui passavano asticelle ripiegate alle estremità. Scuotendo lo strumento, le asticelle si muovevano nei fori producendo un rumore di sonaglio.

Gli strumenti sono l’arpa (di tipo abbastanza simile, per numero di corde e cassa, alla nostra da concerto), il liuto e l’oboe semplice o doppio (descritto impropriamente come flauto), la lira e il triangolo importati dall’Oriente, ed infine il tamburello e le nacchere.

C’era anche la tromba, usata dai militari: corta per trasmettere gli ordini e suonata da un singolo trombettiere, lunga e d’argento suonata da araldi in drappello.

Il sistro, il tamburello e le nacchere, che si suonavano tenendo in ciascuna mano una sola piastra, compaiono invece in processioni e pubbliche celebrazioni.
