Le storie furono trascritte nel Medioevo.
Una delle principali fonti del ciclo, il cosiddetto Libro delle Invasioni, risale all’XI secolo d.C., ma rispecchia un mondo pre-cristiano molto più antico.
Si narra di una grande battaglia combattuta tra diversi popoli per ottenere il dominio dell’Irlanda.
Nel corso dei secoli, gli studiosi hanno dibattuto sull’eventuale corrispondenza di questi popoli con i veri invasori della storia, ma in merito non esiste alcuna prova certa.
Si ritiene che gli abitanti originari dell’Irlanda fossero i fomoriani (un popolo di semidei), che si difesero con successo dalle invasioni di partoloniani e nemediani (il secondo popolo che si stabilì in Irlanda dopo il diluvio).
Quarti invasori furono i Tuatha De Dannan, un popolo magico, soprannaturale, che aveva stretto rapporti matrimoniali con fomoriani.
Nonostante il legame di sangue che univa le due razze, tra di loro scoppiò una guerra che durò sette anni, vinta dai Tuatha De Danann con la seconda battaglia di Moytura.
Altre storie appartenenti a questo ciclo comprendono il tragico racconto dei figli di Lir e la storia dell’amore del principe Midir per la bella Etain.
