Nelle mastabe più antiche sul lato est si trova una stele che raffigura una falsaporta sulla quale sono incisi il nome e i titoli del defunto.
Sulla parete opposta a quella d’accesso fu posta la falsaporta e le pareti iniziarono ad essere ornate di iscrizioni e pitture.
Verso la fine dell’Antico Regno il numero delle stanze aumentò considerevolmente tanto da diventare un autentico labirinto di sale e corridoi. Nel Nuovo Regno furono sostituite dall’ipogeo.
Le mastabe si trovano nella zona di Menfi raggruppate attorno a delle piramidi, così da formare delle necropoli dalle lunghe strade che si intersecano ad angolo retto.
