All’Università di Yale, negli Stati Uniti, è conservato un volume di duecentoquattro pagine, scritto e illustrato a mano su pergamena, datato con il radiocarbonio tra il 1404 e il 1438.
Un libro straordinario da sfogliare, ma che si è rivelato un tormento per gli studiosi.
Nessuno, infatti, è ancora riuscito a capire in che lingua sia critto e perché raffiguri una serie di piante e fiori mai visti prima, oltre a oscure rappresentazioni cosmologiche e astronomiche.
Wilfrid Voynich, un mercante di libri rari statunitense, lo acquistò dal collegio gesuita di Villa Mondragone, nei pressi di Frascati nel 1912. Da allora, in tanti hanno cercato di decifrare il manoscritto. Quando, alla fine della Seconda guerra mondiale, gli esperti di crittografia della Marina statunitense studiarono e analizzarono alcuni vecchi codici cifrati per mettere alla prova nuovi sistemi di decodifica, il Manoscritto Voynich fu l’unico a resistere a tutte le analisi.
Alcuni ipotizzarono che fosse stato scritto da Ruggero Bacone in una sorta di latino camuffato, ma gli studiosi del filosofo escludono qualunque tipo di collegamento con il pensatore del Duecento.
Un filologo propose che fosse stato scritto in ucraino con le vocali rimosse ma, sebbene così tradotti alcuni passaggi abbiano un vago senso, non c’è correlazione tra il testo e le illustrazioni.
Un altro studioso attribuì il testo ai Catari e lo interpretò come un misto di diverse lingue medievali, la traduzione proposta però si rivelò priva di senso.
Secondo recenti studi, nonostante alcuni ricercatori lo considerino un falso rinascimentale creato ad arte per truffare qualche ricco collezionista o addirittura un sovrano, il manoscritto conterebbe un messaggio autentico che attende solo di essere decodificato.
