Il loto egizio o loto bianco d’Egitto (Nymphaea lotus) era una pianta acquatica sacra con grandi fiori bianchi o rosei appartenenti ai generi Nelumbo e Nymphaea, diffusa nelle regioni calde e temperate.
Nella raffigurazione ci viene mostrato l’ atto di annusare il fiore, il cui profumo è quello della sua essenza spirituale, analogamente all’ “odore di santità” della dottrina cristiana.
I quattro figli di Horus vengono rappresentati mentre escono da un fiore di loto.
Anche Nefertem , figlio di Ptah, il Fuoco Creativo, nasce da questo fiore.
Questo tipo di fiore lo troviamo spesso nell’architettura, nelle pitture tombali, o come motivo decorativo su piccoli oggetti.
Nelle scene tombali, in cui sono rappresentati banchetti, si vede che boccioli di loto venivano offerti agli ospiti i quali li attaccavano al cerchietto che guarniva la loro fronte.
