Lincoln nato da una famiglia di pionieri seguì gli studi giuridici, che gli fecero guadagnare ben presto una solida reputazione per la sua onestà.
I repubblicani lo candidarono alla presidenza nel 1860. Ottenendo la maggioranza dei voti Lincoln entrò alla Casa Bianca e subito rifiutò di prendere in considerazione un’eventuale estensione della schiavitù.
Il loro esempio fu seguito da altri stati del sud facendo scoppiare la guerra di Secessione che si concluse nel 1865 con la vittoria dei nordisti.
Nel 1862 il presidente emanò il proclama di emancipazione che liberava gli schiavi e autorizzava la creazione di unità militari di colore.
Lincoln, però, era determinato a porre l’emancipazione su una base permanente.. Nel 1864 propose l’introduzione di un emendamento contro la schiavitù nella Costituzione, emendamento che venne accettato dopo la sua rielezione nel 1865.
Poche settimane dopo l’inizio del suo secondo mandato, Lincoln annunciò pubblicamente il suo sostegno al suffragio limitato per i neri in Lousiana.
Il 14 aprile del 1865, un fanatico sudista, John Wilkes Booth, preoccupato dell’eventualità che i neri potessero ottenere il diritto di voto, uccise Lincoln, a Washington.
