Cleopatra VII fu la più nota delle regine adoratrici di Iside e quella più devotamente dedita al suo culto. Si definiva “la nuova Iside” e spesso si mostrava abbigliata come la dea.

Fu costretta a sposare il proprio fratello minore Tolomeo.I consiglieri di quest’ultimo complottarono per liberarsi di questa regina che oltre ad essere molto bella aveva un forte carattere ed un intelligenza superiore.

Sebbene Roma fosse più propensa ad appoggiare le pretese di Tolomeo che non quelle di Cleopatra, ella trovò in Giulio Cesare un potente alleato.

Roma era contraria al culto di Iside, ma Giulio Cesare manifestò sempre una grande tolleranza pur essendo convinto che queste aggregazioni costituissero una minaccia per la stabilità dello stato.

A quanto sembra, in Egitto, Cesare si incontrò con un individuo chiamato “l’alto pontefice di Iside” e può darsi che questi gli abbia assicurato la collaborazione del clero isiaco, a patto che egli si facesse sostenitore della rivendicazione dei suoi pretendenti al trono d’Egitto.

Non è escluso che l’incontro tra Cleopatra e Giulio Cesare sia stato orchestrato da clero isiaco che vedeva in questo sodalizio la fine dell’abbattimento di templi e santuari isiaci a opera delle autorità romane.
