E’ la terza forma della tomba egizia insieme alla mastaba e alla piramide.
I principi di base relativi alla concezione di sepoltura sono pressoché invariati rispetto alle altre costruzioni sepolcrali.
Nell’ipogeo in una camera d’offerta o cappella, si trovavano il tavolo d’offerte, la nicchia per la statua funeraria e la stele. In un’altra stanza, ermeticamente chiusa, riposava la mummia nel suo sarcofago.
Già dalla fine dell’Antico Regno, i governatori dei nomoi e dei territori lontani, come quelli di Elefantina, ottennero, sotto la I Dinastia, l’autorizzazione a farsi inumare presso le loro province.
Avendo ottenuto una certa autonomia sui propri domini, i nobili, durante il primo periodo intermedio, si facevano seppellire in ipogei che nel corso del Medio Regno ebbero un successo quasi quanto quello delle mastabe.
Durante il Nuovo Regno l’ipogeo divenne la tipologia sepolcrale preferita dai faraoni, che fecero così scavare le loro dimore eterne dando vita alla Valle dei Re.
Tombe
Le tombe nell’antico Egitto si evolsero nel corso di più di 3.000 anni, con il comparire di strumenti più efficienti e con la scoperta e il miglioramento di nuove strategie architettoniche.
Mastabe
Nelle mastabe più antiche sul lato est vi era una stele che raffigurava una falsaporta sulla quale erano incisi il nome e i titoli del defunto.
Piramidi
La piramide era chiamata MR (pronunciato MER), il prefisso M significa il luogo ed R designa l’atto di salire: quindi luogo dell’ascensione.
Ipogei
L’ipogeo è una sepoltura sotterranea scavata al fianco delle pareti calcaree dominanti la valle del Nilo sino al Delta.
