Il gufo ha una valenza simbolica ambivalente.
Come simbolo della scienza e del sapere, appare frequentemente nella sigla di librerie e editori scientifici, il che si deve anche al fatto che la dea Atena/Minerva era ritenuta la personificazione della sapienza.
Nelle credenze popolari ha un significato negativo, probabilmente per la sua vita notturna, la sua asocialità, la silenziosità del volo e per il verso che ricorda il pianto.
I Sumeri ritenevano che il gufo fosse associato alla morte. In una tavoletta risalente al 2300-2000 a.C. si può vedere Inanna affiancata da due gufi che rappresentavano la morte.
La tradizione sosteneva che se un gufo compariva sul Campidoglio il luogo doveva assolutamente essere pulito con acqua e zolfo per scacciare le entità negative che aveva portato con sé.
L’Ebraismo immaginava che il demone Lilith fosse in compagnia di un uccello notturno come il gufo. Nell’Induismo era ritenuto la cavalcatura della dea Durga, che si manifesta come “Camunda”. Presso i Maya dello Yucatan il dio dei morti Hunakau aveva la testa di gufo.
Nella tradizione dei nativi americani del nord-ovest il gufo era uno degli animali totemici. Rappresentava il creatore della notte ed era quindi simbolo di saggezza, perspicacia e proiezione astrale.
Se gli abitanti dei villaggi Apache o Navajo erano colpiti da una malattia contagiosa attorno al villaggio sarebbero apparsi diversi gufi per avvertire i guerrieri o i cacciatori di ritorno a casa.
In India per favorire i sogni premonitori erano poste delle piume di gufo sotto il cuscino. Si credeva che in questo modo il suo potere di poter scrutare la notte e vedere l’invisibile si trasmettesse alla persona che le utilizzava con l’intenzione di capire i propri sogni.
