Ulisse Grant, militare e politico statunitense, fu presidente degli Stati Uniti dal 1869 al 1877.
Colonnello dei volontari dell’Illinois nel 1863, all’inizio della guerra di Secessione, guidò le truppe nordiste alla vittoria di Vicksburg.
Al generale Grant si arrese il generale sudista Robert E. Lee al 1865.
La sua amministrazione, come presidente, si identificò con l’età della Ricostruzione, la cosiddetta Gilded Age.
La Gilded Age era basata su scelte economiche orientate unilateralmente verso gli interessi della grande industria e del capitale finanziario.
Morì il 23 luglio 1885 a Wilton nello Stato di New York, a 63 anni. Il suo corpo riposa a New York, con quello della moglie, nella Grant’s Tomb, il più grande mausoleo del Nord America.
