Voluta nel 1814 per celebrare il ritorno di Vittorio Emanuele I a Torino, la chiesa della Gran Madre, fu eretta nel 1818 da Ferdinando Bonsignore e completata poi nel 1831.
È preceduta da un’ampia scala e da un pronao esastilo con trabeazione e timpano.
Tra il 1933 e il 1940 subì alcuni cambiamenti in occasione della sistemazione dell’Ossario dei Caduti della Grande Guerra.
Ai piedi della gradinata il monumento a Vittorio Emanuele I di Giuseppe Gaggini è affiancato dalle Statue della Religione e della Fede di Carlo Chelli.
Ai lati della scalinata che conduce all’ingresso, le due statue raffiguranti la Fede e la Religione sono state realizzate dal carrarese Carlo Chelli.
L’interno è a pianta circolare e la cupola si rifà al Pantheon e alla chiesa parigina della Madeleine.
Nella chiesa sono custodite le statue di San Maurizio, della Beata Margherita di Savoia, del Beato Amedeo di Savoia, di San Giovanni Battista e opere come la Vergine col Bambino di Andrea Galassi e il Crocifisso e il Sacro Cuore di Gesù di Edoardo Rubino.
Luogo molto amato dagli esoteristi ma anche dai turisti che ne apprezzano la sobrietà e la vicinanza al fiume.
