Le Gorgoni erano tre creature terrificanti: Steno (forte), Euriale (ampio-vagante) e Medusa (astuta), figlie di Forco e di Ceto, abitanti del mare. Erano sorelle delle Graie e, secondo alcuni, di Echidna.
Poseidone aveva preso con la forza Medusa in un tempio consacrato ad Atena, al momento della sua uccisione per mano di Perso la Gorgone era gravida. Quando Perseo la decapitò, dal suo cadavere (o forse dal suo sangue) nacquero Crisaore e Pegaso.
Una vena della Gorgone produceva sangue che aveva il potere di restituire la vita ai morti, e un’altra invece dava il sangue che uccideva.
Le descrizioni sull’aspetto delle Gorgoni sono discordanti, a volte sono descritte come bellissime creature. Si narra, infatti, che Atena diede a Perseo il potere di uccidere Medusa perché si era vantata di superare la dea in bellezza.
L’arte antica invece le raffigura come mostri alati con occhi infuocati, denti lunghi e lingua biforcuta, unghie di bronzo e capelli di serpenti.
Quando Perseo uccise Medusa, diede la sua testa ad Atena che la pose nel centro del suo scudo. Ssecondo gli ateniesi, invece, la dea seppellì la testa nel luogo, dove si teneva il mercato e donò una ciocca dei capelli della Gorgone alla città di Tegea perché la proteggesse in guerra.
L’ombra di Medusa, come quella di altri mortali, andò nel regno di Ade a spaventare le ombre dei morti.
