Innamorata del bellissimo Aci, un pastore figlio di Pan e della Ninfa Simento, ella respinse più e più volte il Ciclope.
Un giorno Polifemo, mentre era seduto sulla cima di un colle e suonava il flauto in onore dell’amata, vide Aci e Galatea riposare abbracciati sulla riva del mare.
Accecato dalla gelosia, afferrò un masso e lo scagliò con tutta la sua forza sul pastore uccidendolo.
Galatea tramutò il sangue di Aci in un fiume, così da mantenerlo vivo, Aci diventò in questo modo un dio fluviale.
Galatea è frequentemente raffigurata nel mare sul suo carro trainato da delfini e seguita da un corteo di Tritoni e Nereidi.
