Durante il corso della V dinastia i funzionari e i membri della corte acquisirono sempre più potere.
Il faraone conferiva loro privilegi e titoli che si traducevano in ricchezze e proprietà terriere che trasformarono presto la società egizia in un sistema feudatario.
Gli uomini che godevano del favore del re conquistarono così sempre più autonomia arrivando perfino a minare l’autorità sovrana e la stabilità del regno.
Essere funzionario garantiva benefici di vario genere ma richiedeva anche responsabilità ed onestà. Colui che manifestava comportamenti scorretti e illegali veniva seriamente punito, a volte anche con il taglio del naso o delle orecchie.
Il faraone era però anche molto generoso nei confronti di chi gli stava vicino. Oltre ad assicurare la ricchezza durante il corso della vita, il re pensava anche alla morte dei sudditi prediletti. Spesso sosteneva in prima persona le spese per la costruzione delle loro mastabe e per il loro corredo funerario.
