I Faraoni Neri vissero nella regione chiamata dai greci Etiopia la “Terra degli uomini con il volto bruciato”, dagli egizi Kush ed in seguito Nubia dal termine nub (oro) grazie alle molte miniere he la caratterizzava, e che oggi è divisa tra Etiopia e Sudan.

Rispetto alla terra degli egizi, loro rivali, tutto era più scuro.

Il deserto era color ocra intenso, le piramidi assumevano le sfumature del mattone bruciato e le raffigurazioni dei faraoni e dei dignitari mostravano volti e corpi d’ebano.

Una terra unita all’Egitto dalla stessa religione e architettura, ma divisa da secoli di reciproche e sanguinarie battaglie.

Dopo secoli di oppressione dal Nord, i Faraoni Neri finirono con il dominare l’intero Egitto creando la XXV dinastia, che non aveva legami con la precedente e che non ne avrebbe più avuti in futuro.

Sappiamo pochissimo di questa terra e di questo popolo.

Sorta nella zona di Kerma intorno al 3000 a.C., questa civiltà fu invasa e colonizzata dagli egizi verso il 1400 a.C. ( XVIII dinastia), in seguito sorsero dei regni indipendenti ognuno con una sua capitale:
Kerma 2300 – 1500 a.C.
Napata 1000 – 300 a.C.
Meroe 300 a.C. – 33 d.C.

Immersa nel silenzio del deserto color ocra, oggi si può ammirare la necropoli di Meroe, con più di quaranta piramidi reali. Svettano anche le strane piramidi aguzze, in parte ricostruire dall’archeologo tedesco Hinkel. probabilmente il massimo esperto dei monumenti funerari di quest’area.

Fu Hinkel, nel 1962, che riuscì a salvare dalle acque della diga di Assuan tre templi trasportandoli e poi ricomponendoli nei giardini del museo di Khartoum.

Da decenni, invece, l’archeologo Bonnet è al lavoro nel Nord del Sudan per scoprire i segreti della civiltà di Kerma

All’interno delle fortificazioni della capitale, le costruzioni in mattone, i palazzi, i laboratori, il quartiere religioso mostrano una città ben strutturata e sofisticata.

“Questa civiltà -spiega Bonnet- si estendeva su un territorio immenso, che andava dalla seconda alla quarta cateratta del Nilo.

All’altezza della quarta cateratta c’è una regione mai esplorata, che rappresentò una via fondamentale tra il mondo africano e quello mediterraneo”.

Gli egizi, che non avevano risorse proprie da sfruttare, hanno sempre visto la Nubia come un paese da conquistare proprio per le enormi quantità di materiali utili al popolo del Nilo.

Il primo ad intraprendere una spedizione fu il faraone Djer, attirato dalle miniere d’oro e dall’avorio degli elefanti.

Negli anni seguì una politica di colonizzazione aggressiva con varie incursioni sempre fermate dalle asperità del terreno, finchè il faraone Tuthmosisi I (1505-1493 a.C.) riuscì a conquistare il paese nubiano.

I sacerdoti al seguito del faraone, quando giunsero a Jebel Barkal una città lungo il Nilo poco distante da Kerma, si convinsero di essere giunti al luogo di nascita di Amon-Ra.

La Nubia divenne così la patria spirituale dei faraoni

La colonizzazione di Kerma segnò la fine della sua cultura, i costumi si trasformarono e diventarono più simili a quelli degli egizi.

Di tutti i templi egizi costruiti in Sudan, quello di Soleb voluto da Amenophis III è quello che si è meglio conservato.

Alla base delle colonne degli scudi racchiudo i nomi dei popoli conquistati raffigurati in busti con visi di tipo africano e le braccia incrociate, si tratta di una sorta d’inventario magico della dominazione.

La feroce dominazione degli egizi è dimostrata da molti ritrovamenti.

Tutankhamon usava bastoni da cerimonia con impugnature a forma di uomini nubiani con le braccia legate dietro la schiena, inoltre, le loro immagini si potevano trovare sulle gambe degli sgabelli e ricamate sulle suole delle calzature del faraone.

Fu verso il 1070 a.C. che gli egizi, per motivi ancora inspiegabili, si ritirarono dalla Nubia e la regione cadde nell’oblio fino 747 a.C.

Dopo anni di sottomissione era giunto il momento del riscatto da parte del, come veniva definito dagli egizi, ” miserabile paese di Kush”.

Piye, re di Kush, diventò il primo Faraone Nero. Ebbe così origine la XV dinastia o dinastia etiope, che instaurò un periodo di pace e prosperità lungo quattro secoli.

Sul copricapo reale apparve il doppio cobra che simboleggia il doppio regno.

I Faraone Neri seguirono i costumi e la religione del Nord. Adoravano il dio Amon, decoravano i templi con i geroglifici e venivano seppelliti in piccole piramidi seguendo i classici riti egizi.

Quando e come terminò il regno dei Faraoni Neri resta un mistero.

Sappiamo soltanto che dopo secoli di regno la dinastia cessò di esistere e i faraoni egizi ripreso il sopravvento sulla regione.
