Druidio e la coppa mortale

Rillaton Barrow è un antico tumulo dell’età del bronzo che si trova vicino all’omonimo castello nel sud-est della Cornovaglia.

La leggenda narra che proprio presso questo tumulo apparve uno dei primi fantasmi della Cornovaglia. Forse un sacerdote druido che, avvolto in una lunga tunica fluttuante, sembra sia solito avvicinare i passanti e offrire loro una coppa contenente una bevanda magica.

Secondo un racconto, un nobiluomo dei dintorni incontrò il fantasma a tarda notte mentre cavalcava nella brughiera di ritorno da una giornata di caccia

Passando accanto al tumulo, vide un fragile vecchietto dal volto pallido che parandogli dinanzi gli porse una coppa dorata.

Sulle prime il nobiluomo esitò. Poi cedette alla gran sete e vuotò la coppa fino all’ultima goccia, quando la riabbassò si avvide che un po’ del liquido era rimasto sul fondo. Bevve nuovamente sino a svuotare il calice ma di nuovo il liquido ricomparve.

L’uomo si adirò pensando che l’anziana figura volesse prendersi gioco di lui. Gettò quindi il liquido in faccia allo straniero e lasciò cadere la coppa ai suoi piedi.

Spronando il cavallo proseguì verso casa, chiedendosi con apprensione quali eventi potesse presagire il suo incontro con quell’uomo dall’aspetto misterioso.

Pochi giorni dopo il nobiluomo e il cavallo furono trovati morti.

Nel 1837, quando gli archeologi iniziarono a esplorare il tumulo, scoprirono uno scheletro, vari oggetti sacri, un pugnale di bronzo, perline, ceramica, vetro. e accanto al corpo una coppa d’oro, che fu poi chiamata “Rillaton Gold Cup”.
