MITOLOGIA CELTICA
Alla nascita di Deirdre, figlia di Felimid un bardo di Conchobar re dell’Ulster, un druido predisse che la bimba sarebbe diventata una donna dall’irresistibile bellezza ma, aggiunse, questa bellezza avrebbe provocato grandi battaglie e grandi dolori.
Saputo della profezia alcuni uomini del re proposero di uccidere subito la bambina.
Conchobar decise invece di farla crescere in un luogo nascosto e di sposarla egli stesso appena raggiunta la giusta età.
Deirdre crebbe celata al mondo con i suoi genitori adottivi e una balia di nome Levercham. Una mattina la giovane donna vide suo padre che stava scuoiando un vitello e mentre il sangue colava sulla terra coperta di neve un corvo scese in picchiata per berlo.
”Potrei innamorarmi – disse Deirdre alla balia – di un uomo dai capelli neri come le piume di un corvo, dalle guance rosse come il sangue e dalla pelle bianca come la neve”. La balia risposte che a Emain Macha, viveva un certo Naoise che corrispondeva a quella descrizione.
Un giorno la fanciulla, mentre era a Emain Macha, udì un uomo cantare con una splendida voce.
Era Naoise. Deirdre gli si avvicinò e non appena i loro occhi s’incontrarono fu subito amore. Naoise sapeva che la ragazza era promessa al re e quando lei gli propose di fuggire insieme, il giovane rifiutò temendo la collera del re.
MA COME SI PUÒ RESISTERE AD UN GRANDE AMORE ?
Così Deirdre, Naoise e i suoi due fratelli fuggirono da Emain Macha, ben sapendo che il re avrebbe dato loro la caccia.
Vagarono per l’Irlanda, sostando in molti luoghi, poi attraversarono il mare fino a raggiungere la Scozia dove vissero per un po’ con il re finché quest’ultimo non iniziò a desiderare di avere Deirdre per sé. Costretti a lasciare il paese i due giovani si rifugiarono su un’isola sperduta.
Giunta la notizia in Irlanda, i guerrieri del Ramo Rosso furono alquanto dispiaciuti di sapere che dei nobili guerrieri irlandesi vivessero su una piccola isola, quindi chiesero a Conchobar di perdonare i fuggitivi e lasciarli tornare in patria.
Il re accettò ed invitò Naoise e Deirdre a tornare in patria
Naoise e i suoi fratelli erano felicissimi di tornare a casa, ma a garanzia della propria incolumità chiesero al re di essere scortati da tre campioni: Fergus, Cormac e Dubthac. Il re finse di accettare la richiesta, In realtà stava progettando l’uccisione dei fratelli.
Mentre i tre cavalieri riportavano in Irlanda i due innamorati, Conchobar prendeva accordi con uno dei suoi nobili che possedeva una fortezza sulla strada per Emain Macha.
Il re diede ordine di organizzare un banchetto in onore di Fergus, ben sapendo che egli si sarebbe sentito in dovere di partecipare.
Fergus rassicurò Naoise e Deirdre dicendo che avrebbe mandato al proprio posto suo figlio Fiacha per scortarli. Giunti nei pressi di Emain Macha, Deirdre, Naoise, i suoi due fratelli e Fiacha caddero nell’imboscata del re.
Ad attenderli, infatti, c’era Eoghan di Fernmag, figlio di un re rivale con il quale Conchobar tentava di riappacificarsi, al comando di un gruppo di mercenari.
Naoise andò incontro a Eoghan per salutarlo, ma Eoghan cogliendolo di sorpresa lo trapassò con una lancia, Fiacha tentò invano di proteggere Noiose con il proprio corpo, ma la spada di Eoghan trafisse entrambi.
Deirdre fu catturata e portata da Conchobar.
Appresa la notizia Fergus raggruppò velocemente un esercito ed attaccò Emain Macha, uccidendo centinaia di guerrieri e incendiando la fortezza quindi, lasciato l’Ulster si rifugiò presso la regina Medb nel Connacht. Deirdre, prigioniera del re, per un anno rifiutò di diventare sua sposa.
Chonchobar per punirla la costrinse a vivere con Eoghan, ma la giovane riuscì a sfuggire anche a questo destino.
Un giorno Conchobar ed Eoghan stavano accompagnando Deirdre con la carrozza ad una fiera, quando la ragazza vide una grossa pietra sul ciglio della strada, senza esitare, si buttò fuori dal carro picchiando la testa contro il masso e morendo all’istante.
