I Minoici, gli abitanti di Creta di circa 4000 anni fa, davano lustro a questa antica civiltà con i loro commerci e con le loro ricchezze.
Secondo una teoria degli scienziati, la loro civiltà fu cancellata da un’eruzione vulcanica che distrusse quasi del tutto l’isola di Thina (Santorini), che si trova a 110 Km di distanza.
Il ricordo della civiltà minoica venne dimenticata, ma una leggenda fu tramandata per millenni: quella del re Minosse e del suo mostruoso figliastro, mezzo uomo e mezzo toro, il Minotauro.
La scoperta più sensazionale fu però il ritrovamento di un palazzo di molti piani, anche sotterranei, ricco di tesori. Sulle pareti affreschi di fanciulle danzanti, di tori, acrobati e scene di vita marina. Nel salone, in cui era probabilmente posto il trono, il pavimento era ricoperto in alabastro.
Archeologi e storici furono subito d’accordo che questo edificio era una reggia. Tuttavia nel 1972 uno studioso tedesco Wunderlich dichiarò che il palazzo di Cnosso non era la sede dei regnanti minoici, ma un sepolcro.
Secondo Wunderlich i silos di pietra erano tombe, gli affreschi murali simboleggiavano il trapasso dell’anima nell’aldilà. Il palazzo poi, oltre a sorgere in un luogo poco adatto ad essere difeso, mancava di cucine e scuderie.
Eppure sul luogo non esistono tracce di sepolture né di salme mummificate; inoltre in 80 anni di scavi non è venuto alla luce nulla che potesse far pensare ad un sepolcro.
Per ora resta forse imprigionata per sempre sotto cumuli di pietra.
