Le città italiane, nella prima metà del Quattrocento, non riuscendo a trovare il modo per costruire un progetto nazionale, proseguirono nelle lotte rivali, cosicché la guerra divenne uno stile di vita permanente.
Il mestiere delle armi diventò una notevole fonte di reddito e da questa situazione di guerra perenne nacquero le Compagnie di ventura.
Le prime Compagnie furono in prevalenza costituite da stranieri come quella di Guarnieri di Urslingen costituita da tedeschi.
Il primo condottiero italiano fu Alberico da Barbiano. La sua Compagnia di San Giorgio fu al fianco di Urbano VI, quando sconfisse a Marino la Compagnia di Bretoni, sostenitori di Clemente VII.
Da queste prime Compagnie di Ventura derivò, nel XV secolo, quella di Braccio di Fortebraccio da Montone, di Muzio Attendolo Sforza (padre di Francesco Sforza), Jacopo dal Verme, Niccolò Piccinino, Facino Cane, Francesco Bussone detto il Carmagnola, Bartolomeo Colleoni ed Erasmo Gattamelata.
