I campi Iaru e Hotep erano le località dove risiedevano i defunti e figuravano già nei “Testi delle Piramidi”.
I campi Iaru (campi dei Giunchi o delle Canne), erano collocati nel cielo, nell’orizzonte orientale a contatto con l’orizzonte terrestre nelle vicinanze della porta attraverso cui il sole saliva in cielo ed iniziava il suo viaggio da oriente a occidente.
Cioè il luogo dalle belle strade che il defunto avrebbe percorso insieme ad Orione e dove la sua esistenza sarebbe stata simile a quella che aveva condotto sulla terra, regnando sugli akhu, i defunti luminosi, identificati con le stelle e compagni del re morto
I testi descrivono questi campi come una immensa distesa d’acqua e il dio sole, il faraone e le principali divinità si immergevano per purificarsi all’inizio di ogni giorno.
I campi Hotep si trovavano anch’essi nel cielo, ad occidente, infatti si definiva il sole al tramonto con la frase:
L’espressione campi Hotep, o delle offerte, trovata in una tomba dell’Antico Regno sembra essere piuttosto inconsueta per una dimora eterna, ma indicava semplicemente che bisognava essere ben riforniti per sopravvivere eternamente.
Il suo regno celeste era diviso in due parti: gli stati di Horus e di Seth:
ed egli seduto su un grande trono dove, oltre a ricevere l’omaggio dei suoi sudditi (gli akhu), aveva facoltà di giudizio e di dare ordini, conservava cioè i due più importanti privilegi che aveva avuto nella vita terrena.
