Il Bennu era un uccello sacro identificato con la Fenice e rappresentava il Ba del dio Ra, di cui era l’emblema, infatti, nel tardo periodo il geroglifico raffigurante il Bennu era usato per rappresentare il dio sole.
Nel mito della creazione fu la prima forma di vita ad apparire sulla collina primordiale che sorse dal caos acquatico.
Raffigurato come l’Airone che si posava sulla sommità delle rocce che sbucavano dopo l’inondazione del Nilo, il suo ritorno annunciava un nuovo periodo di ricchezza e fertilità.
Nei testi funerari il defunto a volte era assimilato al Bennu, considerato la manifestazione di Osiride risorto.
La teologia Eliopolitana racconta che l’uccello sorse dalle fiamme di un albero sacro, e che il suo canto era talmente divino che il dio Ra arrestava la sua barca per ascoltarlo.
