Si trattava, però, di una barba posticcia, che veniva retta da una cordicella legata dietro le orecchie, e veniva esibita soltanto in occasioni di feste o di pubbliche apparizioni. Durante il Medio Regno anche i nomarchi e alcuni funzionari usavano portare una barba posticcia, più corta però rispetto a quella del faraone. I barbieri erano numerosi nell’antico Egitto e la loro professione, tra le più comuni, non era affatto redditizia.
Spesso esercitavano all’aria aperta correndo di casa in casa alla ricerca di clienti fino a tarda sera.
