Baphomet

Il Baphomet (o Bafometto) è uno dei simboli esoterici più conosciuti e controversi erroneamente considerato un demone appartenente alla gerarchia infernale.

Per molti anni gli studiosi hanno creduto che Baphomet fosse un idolo pagano o un demone. Questa ipotesi nasce dalla raffigurazione più famosa di Baphomet creata da Eliphas Levi (contenuta nel libro occultista del 1897 Dogme et Rituel de la Haute Magie).

Baphomet è raffigurato con una testa caprina molto simile a quella con cui veniva rappresentato Satana, con un pentacolo inciso sulla fronte e una torcia tra le corna. Le ali, un paio di seni, un bastone con un serpente attorcigliato in grembo e vari simboli dall‘oscuro significato.

La figura di Baphomet rappresentata da Eliphas Levi è riconducibile a molte divinità antiche (al dio celtico Cenrunnos o al dio greco Pan) e comprende numerosi principi esoterici.

Levi scrisse nel suo libro:
“La capra porta il segno del pentagramma sulla fronte, con una punta in alto, simbolo di luce. Le sue mani formano il segno dell’ermetismo. Quella rivolta verso l’alto verso la luna bianca di Chesed, l’altra verso il basso in direzione di quella nera di Geburah. Questo segno esprime la perfetta armonia della misericordia con la giustizia.

Un suo braccio è femminile, l’altro è maschile come quelli dell’androgino di Khunrath.

La fiamma di intelligenza brillante tra le corna è la luce magica dell’equilibrio universale. L’immagine dell’anima elevata sopra la materia, come la fiamma, pur essendo legato alla materia, brilla sopra di essa. L’orrenda testa esprime l’orrore del peccatore, che agendo materialmente, è l’unico responsabile che dovrà sopportare la punizione, perché l’anima è insensibile secondo la sua natura e può solo soffrire nel momento in cui si materializza. L’asta eretta in piedi al posto dei genitali simboleggia la vita eterna.

Il corpo ricoperto di squame rappresenta l’acqua, il semicerchio sopra, l’atmosfera. L’umanità è rappresentata dai due seni e dalle braccia androgine”.

Quindi l’androgino Baphomet (concetto fondamentale secondo certi filoni occultisti) è il cumulo dei processi alchemici nonché l’unione di forze opposte.

Il fallo a forma di serpenti intrecciati su un bastone è riconducibile a quanto già detto per il serpente Uroboro.

Sulle braccia di Baphomet vi sono due scritte. “Solve” sul braccio destro e “Coagula” sul braccio sinistro. “Solve” vuol dire passare dal solido al liquido, ovvero sciogliere, “Coagula” l’esatto contrario, cioè il passaggio di stato da liquido a solido

Il riferimento ai processi alchemici è in questo caso chiarissimo.

Trasformare la nuda pietra in oro che, dal punto di vista spirituale, significa trasformare un uomo ignorante in un uomo illuminato.

La posizione delle mani di Baphomet riconduce a uno dei dogmi più importanti dell’ermetismo e dell’esoterismo, ripreso dalla massima di Ermete Trismegisto: “Tutto ciò che sta in basso corrisponde a ciò che si trova in alto, e tutto ciò che si trova in alto, ha una corrispondenza a ciò che è in basso, per compiere i miracoli dell’Uno”.

Due concetti che rimandano a una realtà che di per sé costituirebbe un unico insieme indivisibile, un’unità in cui il microcosmo è in stretto rapporto col macrocosmo.

Baphomet racchiude in sé una moltitudine di significati alchemici ed esoterici che rimandano anche alla tradizione cabalistica e alla cultura araba. Sicuramente non è un demone della gerarchia infernale. Nonostante questo è stato ampiamente utilizzato e snaturato del suo significato originale dal satanismo.

Ed è altresì misterioso che Baphomet, si trovi anche in moltissime cattedrali e chiese italiane, come per esempio nel Battistero di Pisa o come chiave di volta a Castel del Monte in Puglia.
