I babilonesi si stabilirono nella regione mesopotamica dopo i Sumeri.
Svilupparono una civiltà che sotto il dominio politico di amorrei, cassiti, elamiti e varie dinastie nazionali durò dal 2003 al 539 a.C. Ha le sembianze di un leone, la testa di serpente con le corna. Il corpo è ricoperto di scaglie, dalla quali spuntano peli sulla testa e sul collo. Le zampe anteriori sono quelle tipiche di un felino, mentre quelle posteriori sono quelle di un volatile. Alcuni esemplari sono rappresentati sulla porta di Isthar, edificata da Nabucodonosor in onore di Marduk, dove rivestono il ruolo di difensori.
Secondo alcuni esperti, il drago raffigurerebbe simbolicamente le stagioni dell’anno.
