Alfa (Α o α) e Omega (Ω o ω), sono la prima e l’ultima lettera dell’alfabeto greco creato, secondo la leggenda dalle Moire- Parche le dee del destino.
L’età ellenistica si fa convenzionalmente iniziare con il 323 a.C., anno della morte di Alessandro Magno e terminare con la morte dell’ultima sovrana ellenistica, Cleopatra d’Egitto e con la conquista romana del Regno tolemaico d’Egitto (battaglia di Azio del 31 a.C.) che porta l’Oriente nell’orbita romana occidentale.
Ed è di questo periodo la credenza secondo cui le lettere, i suoni e le parole costituirebbero gli elementi della creazione.
Inoltre, secondo tale credenza, alle lettere dell’alfabeto greco e di quello ebraico spetterebbe anche un valore numerico.
Si diede così il via a tutte quelle speculazioni cosmogoniche che costituiranno, specialmente nell’esoterismo ebraico (Kabala) il fulcro della gnosi speculativa.
Le due lettere furono impiegate come motivo decorativo delle tombe cristiane per affermare che la persona sepolta aveva ravvisato in Dio il suo principio e il suo fine ultimo.
Nel Medioevo alfa e omega fungevano spesso da ornamento dell’aureola del Giudice del Mondo, essendo poste a sinistra e a destra del suo capo.
