I Greci, che male avevano sopportato la dominazione di Filippo, amarono subito Alessandro, tanto da affidargli il comando della lotta contro i Persiani.
Sconfitto Dario nella grande battaglia di Isso (333 a.C.), Alessandro conquistò i territori dell’Impero Persiano ed estese il suo dominio fino alla Battriana, l’attuale Afghanistan, e al fiume Indo nell’India.
Mentre progettava nuove imprese, Alessandro morì improvvisamente a Babilonia nel 323 a.C.
Suo figlio, ancora in fasce, non era certo in grado di governare perciò l’immenso impero fu diviso tra i generali, i Diadochi, i quali quando il figlio di Alessandro morì, divisero il territorio in regni detti ellenistici.
Questi territori dettero vita ad una civiltà (ellenista) formata dall’unione dei costumi dei popoli sottomessi con quelli dei Greci.
Alessandro Magno fu inoltre il fondatore di Alessandria d’Egitto, città della corte dei Tolomei dove convennero scienziati, artisti, poeti famosi e dove sorse la prima grande biblioteca del mondo.
