Nonostante il rigoglio vegetale di alcune zone della valle del Nilo gli alberi, nell’antico Egitto, erano presenti in minima misura.
I due alberi a fronde più comuni erano il sicomoro e l’acacia, vi erano poi la palma dum e il dattero coltivati per i loro frutti.
Nel corso dei secoli furono introdotti il melograno, il mandorlo, il balsamino, il limone e l’ulivo; queste piante sopravvissero solo nei frutteti dove ricevevano cure costanti e molto attente..
Durante il regno della regina Hatshepsut, Nemesi, comandante di una spedizione nel Punt, portò in patria trentun alberi da incenso che furono poi ripianati nelle terrazze del tempio mortuario della regina a Deir el Bahri.
Il legno di tamerice era utilizzato per fabbricare manici di utensili e di strumenti per l’aratura; quello di sicomoro serviva per la costruzione di statue, sarcofagi, mobili e porte.
Con il legno di acacia si costruivano le impugnature delle armi, gli alberi delle navi e gli scafi; la palma si impiegava nelle primitive impalcature architettoniche e per le travi dei tetti.
I cedri utilizzati per le grandi costruzioni navali, per gli imponenti portali dei templi e dei pali di sostegno o delle estremità dei piloni.
Dalle zone interne dell’Africa veniva il legno nero heben (l’ebano) impiegato per la preparazione di mobili di lusso.
Sia la dea Iside che la dea Hathor sovente si manifestavano tra le fronde di un sicomoro, mentre una palma dum, alta circa venticinque metri, rappresentava il dio Ttoh ad Ermopoli.
Lo stesso pilastro Djed, altro non è che un albero privato dei rami ed è senza dubbio in rapporto con l’albero in cui fu rinchiuso Osiride.
