Nome assunto dal faraone egizio Amenofi IV (1372-1354 ca. a.C.) figlio di Amenofi III (1390-1353 a.C.) e di Tiye; salì al trono dopo la morte di suo fratello maggiore.
Sovrano della XVIII dinastia del Nuovo Regno, nei suoi diciassette anni da faraone ribelle assunse il nome del dio Aton, il dio Sole, con cui si identificò.
Dopo aver imposto il culto di questa divinità, il faraone trasferì la capitale da Tebe ad Akhetaton (l’attuale Tell el-Amarna), che divenne il centro del nuovo culto, e combatté contro i potenti sacerdoti che cercavano di mantenere vivo il culto del dio Amon.
La riforma religiosa di Akhenaton ebbe conseguenze sull’arte egizia, che passò dalla consueta forma rituale stilizzata a una rappresentazione di carattere più naturalistico
Sulla letteratura religiosa che conobbe un nuovo sviluppo.
Il fiorire di questa nuova cultura tuttavia ebbe fine con la morte del faraone. Tutankhamon il suo successore, riportò la capitale a Tebe e restaurò il culto di Amon.
