Gli antichi egizi assegnavano grande importanza alle acconciature, alla cosmesi e alla pulizia personale. I benestanti avevano in casa una stanza da bagno. Anche i poveri non rinunciavano a lavarsi almeno una volta al giorno, usando cenere o argilla come detergente.
Benché nelle occasioni ufficiali gli antichi egizi indossassero una parrucca, non rinunciavano a tenere sani e puliti i capelli naturali. La parrucca infatti non li copriva completamente: i ritratti mostrano spesso una frangia liscia che spunta sotto una parrucca a treccioline.
Le parrucche erano realizzate in capelli naturali o in fibre vegetali e quelle delle regine erano talvolta ornate da piume di avvoltoio, da nastri e gioielli e cosparse di profumo.
Il faraone sopra la parrucca indossava il caratteristico copricapo detto nemes, formato da un tessuto a righe azzurre e dorate, che ricadeva con due lembi sulle spalle. Sulla fronte portava un diadema a forma di cobra, l’ureus. I sacerdoti si rasavano completamente il capo per ragioni di purezza spirituale.
