Già dall’Antico Regno si trovano iscrizioni in cui il defunto si appellava al giudizio di Osiride.

Il defunto chiedeva al dio di vendicarlo trasformandosi in uccello da preda pronto a colpire chiunque profanasse la sua tomba e volesse appropriarsi dei suoi averi.

La stessa vendetta era da applicarsi a chi entrava nella tomba senza essersi precedentemente purificato o deteriorasse il suo nome inciso sulla sepoltura.

Le maledizioni erano varie.

Si auguravano aggressioni da parte di animali feroci, malasorte ai colpevoli e alla sua progenia, perdita dei beni, distruzione del nome, oblio del culto funerario e addirittura che le offerte non scaturissero dalla sua voce e che non fosse sepolto sulla montagna.
